What Happened
Will Venable never actually planned on managing an MLB team in the postseason. Growing up surrounded by baseball—his father Max played 12 seasons in the majors—Venable's true childhood dream was starring in the NBA.
Yet, after a stellar two-sport career at Princeton where he earned first-team All-Ivy honors in both basketball and baseball, Venable carved out a nine-year MLB playing career. Today, he is making headlines as the skipper of a surging White Sox squad, guiding them deep into the postseason just years after the franchise hit rock bottom.
From Hardwood Standout to MLB Diamond
Before scouts noticed his raw baseball talent, Venable was a 6-foot-3 guard slashing to the hoop for the Princeton Tigers, even dropping 21 points against powerhouse Duke as a senior. Basketball was his first love and ultimate escape.
However, his baseball instincts proved undeniable. After joining the Princeton baseball team mid-season with virtually no prior collegiate practice, he immediately produced hits. Selected in the seventh round of the 2005 Draft by the San Diego Padres, Venable fast-tracked his way to the majors by 2008, relying on elite athleticism and fierce competitive instincts.
Why It Matters
Venable’s journey from multi-sport collegiate athlete to elite dugout leader highlights the evolving profile of modern baseball managers. After coaching stints with the Cubs, Red Sox, and the 2023 World Series champion Rangers, he took the reins of a White Sox team that had endured a brutal 121-loss season in 2024.
Instead of a multi-year rebuild, Venable injected instant swagger and resilience. Under his guidance, Chicago shocked the baseball world by securing a playoff berth and winning their first postseason series in over two decades.
What's Next
Now 43 and widely considered a top contender for AL Manager of the Year, Venable has successfully translated his multi-sport competitive drive into managerial gold. While his playing days on the basketball court are long behind him to prevent injuries, his tactical instincts and leadership have breathed new life into a historic franchise just in time for the League Championship Series.
