The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued critical red and orange alerts across multiple districts in Uttarakhand. An intense weather system combining two active systems is bringing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds to the region.
The severe weather window spans from Friday night through the forenoon of September 28. Peak rainfall activity is expected on September 26 and 27, accompanied by widespread light to moderate showers. Meanwhile, high-altitude regions sitting above 4,000 metres are bracing for significant snowfall during this same timeframe.

Authorities are urging pilgrims, tourists, and daily commuters to exercise extreme caution. More than 33 roads across the state—including 14 in Chamoli and 10 in Dehradun—are already blocked, leaving travelers stranded.
The combination of saturated soil and intense rainfall drastically increases the risk of landslides, rockfalls, and sudden flash floods. Key transport arteries, such as the Pithoragarh-Tanakpur National Highway, have experienced prolonged debris slides, trapping commuters and delaying medical transports. Helicopter operations to Kedarnath Dham face mandatory suspensions if flying conditions deteriorate.

The weather office has designated specific threat levels across the state:
- Saturday Red Alert: Bageshwar, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar face heavy downpours. Dehradun, Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Almora are under an orange alert.
- Sunday Red Alert: Tehri Garhwal, Haridwar, and Pauri Garhwal face potential extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Nainital, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, and Uttarkashi remain under orange alerts.
- Monday Forecast: Nainital, Dehradun, Tehri, Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Haridwar, and Pauri Garhwal anticipate intense thunderstorms alongside 30–40 kmph winds.
