Cricket witnessed a rare and historic moment during the Asian Games semi-final clash between India and Sri Lanka, courtesy of Sri Lankan bowler Tharindu Rathnayake.
Known for his unique ability to bowl with both arms, Rathnayake captured the global cricket spotlight by setting a brand new T20 record.
What Happened on the Field
Rathnayake put his rare ambidextrous skill on full display against a formidable Indian batting lineup. He started off bowling right-arm off-spin, but quickly switched to traditional left-arm spin depending on the batter at the crease.
The strategy paid off brilliantly. Rathnayake managed to clean bowl Sanju Samson with a sharp delivery after applying heavy pressure. Later in the innings, during the 19th over, he picked up another crucial wicket by dismissing Shivam Dube with his right-arm off-spin.
Finishing his spell with impressive figures of 2 wickets for 32 runs in 4 overs, Rathnayake officially etched his name in the record books as the first bowler in T20 history to take wickets using both arms in a single match.
The Rules Behind Ambidextrous Bowling
While bowling with both arms sounds like an unfair advantage, it is completely legal under International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations.
However, strict protocols apply. The bowler must clearly inform the umpire which arm they intend to use before delivering the ball, and the umpire then relays this information to the batter. Rathnayake has noted that this tactic allows him to strategically target the specific weaknesses of opposing batters.
Match Outcome and What's Next
Despite Rathnayake's historic individual brilliance, the match itself heavily favored Team India. Batting first, India posted a competitive total of 169/7 in their 20 overs.
In response, the Sri Lankan batting lineup crumbled under pressure, getting bowled out for just 45 runs in 9.5 overs. Team India secured a massive 124-run victory to advance, setting the stage for a high-voltage Asian Games final clash between India and Pakistan.
