Following a weekend of intense heat, weather patterns across Brazil are shifting dramatically. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), a low-pressure system forming between Uruguay, Rio Grande do Sul, and the Atlantic Ocean is giving rise to a severe extratropical cyclone and an advancing cold front.

This meteorological shift is triggering a new wave of heavy storms, lightning, and potential hail across at least eight states spanning the South, Midwest, and Southeast regions.

Why It Matters

The abrupt transition from intense heat to severe weather creates hazardous conditions for millions of residents. Before the storms hit, temperatures reached extreme highs—soaring up to 37°C in São Paulo, 36°C in Belo Horizonte, and reaching a scorching 40°C in Cuiabá.

This sharp contrast between intense heat and incoming cold fronts is heightening the severity of the storms. Regions in Mato Grosso do Sul face heightened risks of severe weather, while parts of Goiás, Minas Gerais, and Brasília continue to battle dangerously low humidity levels alongside the relentless heat.

Regional Breakdown

The instability is impacting different regions in distinct ways:

  • The South: Rain and thunderstorms arrived early in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. Paraná experiences intensifying storms by afternoon and evening, accompanied by localized strong winds.
  • The Southeast: São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and southern Minas Gerais are under active alerts for storms and heavy downpours following peak morning temperatures. Meanwhile, northern Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo remain dry and hot.
  • The Midwest: Mato Grosso do Sul faces severe storm risks, while western Mato Grosso and southern Goiás expect scattered showers. Drier, hot conditions persist in Brasília and eastern Mato Grosso.
  • The North: Heavy rains and persistent storms continue across the western Amazon, affecting Acre, Amazonas, Rondônia, Roraima, and western Pará, while Tocantins stays hot and dry.

Authorities advise residents in affected areas to monitor local meteorological alerts closely as the cold front continues its sweep across the country.
