Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick has raised security concerns regarding the upcoming season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, casting uncertainty over his participation in November.
Safety Concerns in the UAE
Speaking to BBC Sport, Fitzpatrick admitted he is not "100% comfortable" with traveling to the United Arab Emirates. His apprehension stems from ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region involving Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The English golfer recalled a chilling connection to earlier security incidents in the area. "You've only got to look at the hotel that got hit earlier this year," Fitzpatrick said, noting he had been dining in that exact hotel the week he won his previous title. "That's obviously very scary when you think about how close you were to that particular spot."
While Fitzpatrick suggested moving the tournament to a different country would be a "no brainer," he acknowledged the complex commercial realities driving the schedule. "I'm not a sponsor, I'm not paying the bills... I'm sure there's more to it than just what meets the eye."
Tour Officials Monitor the Situation
Led by chief executive Guy Kinnings, DP World Tour organizers are actively assessing security protocols for their upcoming play-off events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. These lucrative tournaments represent the climax of the European-based circuit's season.
"Guy Kinnings can't control what Iran are doing," Fitzpatrick noted, pointing out the frustrating logistical challenges players face when trying to plan their competitive schedules.
Fellow professional Shane Lowry weighed in on the difficult position facing tour management. "They are huge decisions for everyone," Lowry said. "If the tournaments are on, the players are going to go. And if they are not, they will find an alternative."

The DP World Tour maintains that it is closely tracking regional developments. A spokesperson for the organization stated that they remain in constant communication with players and management teams, relying on guidance from international travel advisors.
"As far as our play-offs are concerned, it remains our intention to play as scheduled in the UAE," the spokesperson confirmed, adding that participation choices ultimately rest with individual players.
