What Happened
Kmart Australia has joined a growing wave of major retailers implementing stricter security measures by placing makeup and cosmetic products behind locked glass doors.
The trial is currently underway at select locations, including Kmart's flagship Sydney store in Broadway, as well as Broadmeadows and Melbourne in Victoria. Shoppers browsing popular budget-friendly lines like e.l.f.—which features items starting at just $5—alongside OXX Beauty, SheGlam, and BYS Makeup, now find the items secured behind glass.
Rather than traditional manual locks that require tracking down a staff member with a key, the trial features an automated system. Shoppers press a "Press For Assistance" button, triggering an electronic voice message that announces help is on the way. The cabinet briefly lights up before the door automatically unlocks to grant access to the range.
Why It Matters
A spokesperson for Kmart Australia confirmed the initiative is designed to combat rising retail theft while safeguarding product availability.
"We’re currently trialling new beauty cabinets in selected Kmart stores, designed to support product availability and presentation for our customers," the spokesperson said. The retailer noted that it has received an encouraging initial response and will continue gathering customer feedback as the trial progresses.
This shift highlights growing challenges for brick-and-mortar retailers balancing an open, accessible shopping experience with the financial realities of inventory loss.
Industry-Wide Retail Trend
Kmart's move reflects a broader shift across the Australian retail landscape as major chains ramp up security in beauty and personal care aisles.
Competitors are deploying various anti-theft strategies:
- Big W: Rolled out a curated "Big W Beauty Shop" layout featuring dedicated entrances, enhanced surveillance, anti-theft tags, and locked cases.
- Coles and Woolworths: Increased security for high-value cosmetics and grooming essentials like razors, with some locations utilizing remotely unlocked cabinets.
- Chemist Warehouse & Priceline: Utilizing locked glass cabinets, security stickers, and lockboxes for high-end skincare, fragrances, and beauty tools.
As retail theft continues to impact profit margins nationwide, automated locking systems and curated secure zones are quickly becoming the new normal for everyday shopping.
