An already-strong El Niño has officially crossed into unprecedented territory, surging past historical thresholds at a breakneck pace and entering rare "super" status.

Forecasters have tracked the phenomenon's rapid acceleration since it was first declared. Now, key metrics show it is stronger on this date than any previous recorded event in history, with expectations to climb even higher before peaking later this winter.

What Happened in the Pacific

To measure El Niño's strength, forecasters track sea surface temperatures along the equator using a metric called the Niño 3.4 Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI).

The latest weekly RONI value hit 2.0 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above average. This marks the threshold for "very strong"—the highest official category set by forecasters—giving the event its unofficial "super" moniker.

NOAA forecasts currently place a 75% chance on this El Niño peaking as the strongest event since comprehensive records began in 1950.

Why It Matters Globally

El Niño triggers a domino effect on atmospheric conditions and global weather patterns. As the phenomenon strengthens, its impacts become more pronounced across multiple continents:

  • Hurricane Activity: In the Atlantic, El Niño has driven wind shear to extreme levels, causing a historic delay in hurricane formation. Conversely, the exceptionally warm Pacific has seen explosive activity, including multiple Category 5 hurricanes.
  • Wildfires: Indonesia is experiencing severe drought conditions, creating tinder-dry vegetation and fueling widespread wildfires with limited rainfall for containment.
  • Global Temperatures: Combined with background climate change, this El Niño is driving up global air temperatures, contributing to record-breaking heatwaves worldwide.

The Role of Climate Change

This year’s event is developing in a significantly warmer world than past record-setting events. Because rising global temperatures have shifted baseline ocean heat, scientists now use RONI—which explicitly subtracts background climate warming—to evaluate El Niño's true strength.

Even with this adjusted metric, the current cycle continues to clear hurdles toward historic intensity.

El Niño has not finished growing. The phenomenon typically reaches its peak strength during the winter months, which is also when its influence on global weather systems is most powerful.
