Duncan Sheik, the Grammy-nominated singer best known for the 1996 global hit "Barely Breathing" and the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, has died at the age of 56.
His mother, Suzanne, confirmed that he passed away on Thursday due to organ failure. He had been hospitalized earlier in the week in critical condition following an unspecified health issue.
A Defining 90s Hit and Musical Career
Born in New Jersey, Sheik first captured mainstream attention during his college years at Brown University. He released his self-titled debut album in 1996, featuring the breakout acoustic track "Barely Breathing."
The single spent an impressive 55 consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at Number 16, earned a gold certification, and secured a Grammy nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Although "Barely Breathing" remained his only solo single to crack the Hot 100, Sheik quietly built a prolific, decades-long career. He released nine studio albums, blending melodic pop sensibilities with alternative folk and art-rock influences.
Broadway Triumph With 'Spring Awakening'
In the 2000s, Sheik transitioned his talents to the theater, partnering with poet and songwriter Steven Sater. Their creative partnership reached a pinnacle with Spring Awakening, a rock musical adapted from an 1891 German coming-of-age play.
The production became a massive commercial and critical hit, enjoying a celebrated Broadway run. At the 2007 Tony Awards, the show won Best Musical, while Sheik personally took home awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations. A Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album quickly followed.
A Legacy of Innovation in Theater
Sheik continued pushing creative boundaries in the performing arts over the next two decades. He collaborated with Sater on the 2019 musical Alice by Heart and crafted the moody, atmospheric score for the Broadway adaptation of American Psycho.
His recent theatrical credits included music for The Taming of the Shrew, The Secret Life of Bees, and Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, an off-Broadway production scheduled to debut in the fall. An off-Broadway revival of Spring Awakening is also slated to stage this November.
"The world has lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater," his family shared in a statement, thanking fans and collaborators for an overwhelming outpouring of global support.
