NTT Docomo has officially announced a major shakeup for its popular online-only mobile brand, ahamo. For the first time since its initial launch in March 2021, the carrier is revising its pricing and restructuring data tiers for mobile users across Japan.

Here is a breakdown of what is changing and how it impacts your monthly mobile bill.

What Happened

Starting December 1, Docomo will implement its first-ever price revision for ahamo.

The standard plan, which currently offers 30GB of data, will be upgraded to include 10 more gigabytes—bringing the total to 40GB. To offset the increased capacity, the monthly price will see a minor bump of 165 yen, bringing it to 3,135 yen (tax included).

Alongside this adjustment, Docomo is moving away from a single core offering, evolving ahamo into a tiered system that will eventually feature 40GB, 60GB, and 120GB options.

Why It Matters

The shift signals a broader pricing adjustment across Docomo’s entire ecosystem. Alongside the ahamo updates, the carrier confirmed that other core domestic tariffs—including eximo, 5G Gigaho, and irumo—are also slated for price increases ranging from 110 yen to 550 yen starting this December.

For cost-conscious consumers who rely heavily on online-only plans to keep monthly telecom expenses low, even a modest price hike requires a quick recalculation of data usage versus cost.

Important Context

While a 165-yen increase for an extra 10GB may appeal to heavier mobile data users, it marks a symbolic turning point. ahamo has long maintained its original launch pricing as a cornerstone of affordable, high-speed 5G connectivity in Japan's hyper-competitive carrier market.

As inflation and infrastructure costs continue to pressure major telecom operators, even budget-focused digital brands are beginning to adjust their mathematical models.

What's Next

Subscribers do not need to take immediate action, as the current tariff remains active until the December 1 transition date. However, users should review their average monthly data consumption to decide whether the new 40GB base tier fits their budget or if alternative adjustments are necessary before the changes roll out.
