Sydney Roosters legend Daniel Tupou has officially announced his retirement from rugby league, bringing the curtain down on a stellar career just days after capturing his fourth premiership title.

The 35-year-old winger leaves the sport as one of the most decorated and reliable outside backs in modern NRL history, making the emotional decision to walk away on the ultimate high.

## What Happened

The Roosters confirmed the news via social media on Wednesday, admitting the club was "lost for words" over the departure of their loyal veteran.

Tupou's final appearance on the field came in Sunday’s thrilling grand final victory over Newcastle. Despite speculation throughout the season that he might play on into 2027, the veteran winger chose to hang up his boots. His retirement also follows his omission from Tonga's upcoming World Cup squad, having proudly represented his heritage in 21 Test matches.

## An Incredible Legacy

Debuting for the Sydney Roosters back in 2012, Tupou built an extraordinary legacy across 15 seasons in the elite competition.

He finishes his career with:

  • 307 NRL games, the second-most in Sydney Roosters club history.
  • 198 tries, setting an all-time club record.
  • Four premiership titles (2013, 2018, 2019, and 2026).

Roosters coach Trent Robinson paid glowing tribute to the retiring star, describing him as a pioneer of modern wing play.

"Toops revolutionised the aerial game at the Sydney Roosters and became the greatest high-ball specialist of all time," Robinson said. "He has never chased recognition. He has just turned up, worked hard, cared deeply about his teammates and represented the jersey with humility."

## End of an Era for the Roosters

Tupou’s departure marks the end of an era, contributing to a significant roster exodus for the eastern suburbs powerhouse. He joins high-profile teammates like Angus Crichton, Mark Nawaqanitawase, Connor Watson, and Daly Cherry-Evans in moving on from the club.

Reflecting on his journey, Tupou expressed deep gratitude for his time in the NRL.

"I came here as a young kid just hoping for an opportunity and I could never have imagined the journey that would follow," Tupou said in a club statement.
