Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has directed top power sector officials to brace for potential infrastructure damage and ensure uninterrupted supply where possible.
The Immediate Threat to North Andhra
The deep depression has triggered widespread, intense downpours across several northern districts. The areas facing the highest risk include:
- Srikakulam
- Vizianagaram
- Parvathipuram Manyam
- Visakhapatnam
While the rain is a welcome sight for local farmers, the accompanying gales present a severe threat to the state's electricity infrastructure. Officials warn that high-velocity winds could uproot trees, snap power lines, damage transformers, and collapse electricity poles, leading to widespread blackouts.
Action on a War Footing
During an emergency tele-conference with top Energy Department officials—including leaders from the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL)—Minister Ravi Kumar ordered proactive defenses rather than reactive measures.
The state is deploying a rapid-response strategy to minimize damage:
- Vulnerability Mapping: Special focus is being placed on low-lying coastal regions that are highly susceptible to flooding and storm surges.
- Emergency Stockpiles: Extra electricity poles, replacement transformers, wires, and specialized restoration equipment are being positioned near high-risk zones.
- Specialized Teams: Dedicated emergency response units are being formed to address local power grid failures immediately.
Prioritizing Public Safety
The government's primary directive is the preservation of life. Flooded streets and downed power lines are a lethal combination, making electrocution a major risk during heavy storm surges.
Minister Ravi Kumar emphasized that preventing loss of life due to snapped wires or damaged electrical equipment is the department's absolute highest priority. Restoration work in waterlogged areas will be strictly monitored to protect both the public and field workers.
