Australia’s ODI series against South Africa is officially underway in Durban, but the visitors are sporting a heavily modified lineup. Despite fresh momentum from a 3-0 sweep against Zimbabwe, the Aussies have chosen to leave out several key stars—including regular Test captain Pat Cummins.

Here is what you need to know about Australia's strategic gamble and the key storylines shaping the opening clash.

Why Pat Cummins is Sitting Out

While Pat Cummins has joined the squad in South Africa, he will not feature in the opening match. Stand-in captain Mitchell Marsh confirmed that the decision is entirely strategic, designed to keep the premier fast bowler fresh for the upcoming Test series starting on October 9.

"Pat's main focus is the Test group," Marsh explained. "I’m hopeful that he’ll feature in this series at some stage."

If Cummins does return later in the three-match series—likely in Johannesburg or Potchefstroom—he may still leave the captaincy duties to Marsh to focus purely on his bowling preparation.

The Cameron Green Injury Cloud

All-rounder Cameron Green returns to the starting XI after missing the Zimbabwe series with a shoulder injury. However, his ability to contribute with the ball remains a major question mark.

Green is expected to play primarily as a specialist batter while his shoulder heals. To offset this, Australia has handed a surprise debut to NSW all-rounder Jack Edwards, who was only called into the squad days ago to replace the injured Billy Stanlake. Edwards will serve as a crucial seam-bowling option.

In other selection surprises, young talent Ollie Peake was dropped despite strong recent form, making way for returning veteran quicks Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
