Norway’s royal family is quietly preparing for one of the most significant transitions in its modern history.
As the health of 87-year-old King Harald V continues to decline, Crown Prince Haakon has increasingly assumed the responsibilities of the crown. When he eventually ascends the throne, he will reign as King Haakon VIII.
However, this transition comes at a time of unprecedented turbulence for the Norwegian monarchy, forcing the future king to navigate both a shift in power and a severe public relations crisis.
A Monarchy in Transition
Crown Prince Haakon is no stranger to the throne. Over the past few years, he has repeatedly stepped in as Regent during King Harald’s frequent hospitalizations and medical leaves.
While King Harald has repeatedly stated he will not abdicate—viewing the royal oath as a lifelong commitment—the reality of his physical health has accelerated a de facto transition. Crown Prince Haakon now handles the majority of official duties, foreign visits, and weekly state council meetings.
This gradual passing of the torch is designed to project stability, but the environment surrounding the palace is anything but calm.
The Scandals Inherited by the Future King
The primary challenge facing the future Haakon VIII is not his readiness to rule, but the mounting controversies surrounding his immediate family.
- The Marius Borg Høiby Scandal: The eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit (from a previous relationship) has dominated headlines due to serious legal issues, including charges of assault and drug possession. Because he is a member of the royal household—though not in the line of succession—the scandal has severely damaged the family's reputation.
- The Märtha Louise Controversy: The King’s sister, Princess Märtha Louise, recently married self-proclaimed American shaman Durek Verrett. The wedding sparked intense debate over the commercialization of royal titles and alternative medicine, further polarizing the Norwegian public.
Historically, the Norwegian monarchy has enjoyed some of the highest approval ratings in Europe, often hovering around 80%. Recent polls, however, show a marked decline, with a growing minority questioning the relevance of the institution.
What's Next for the Crown
When Crown Prince Haakon officially becomes King Haakon VIII, his immediate priority will be damage control and modernization.
Unlike older European monarchies, Norway’s royal house is built on a foundation of modesty, transparency, and closeness to the people. To preserve this, Haakon VIII will likely need to draw firmer boundaries between official royal duties and the private actions of non-working family members.
The upcoming reign of Haakon VIII will not just be a continuation of his father's legacy, but a critical test of whether a modern constitutional monarchy can survive the pressures of 21st-century scrutiny.
