What Happened in the Java Sea
A major maritime tragedy unfolded on Sunday when the passenger ferry Virgo Transport 8 capsized in the Java Sea. Carrying 243 people on board, the vessel was travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin on Borneo island when it encountered severe weather and high waves.
According to local search and rescue agencies, at least six people have died, while over 100 others remain missing. Emergency crews have successfully evacuated 108 survivors from the water, but operations are ongoing as teams battle challenging conditions.
Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi noted that aerial observations indicate the vessel flipped over rather than completely sinking, though official investigations into the exact cause are still pending.
The Urgent Search and Rescue Effort
Families have gathered anxiously at the port in Banjarmasin waiting for updates as authorities mobilize a massive response. Rescuers deployed ships, aircraft, and specialized personnel to the vessel's last known position, located roughly 148 kilometres from its destination.
Survivors recounted harrowing escapes as the ferry turned over in the dark. Passenger Rinto Arahab described clinging to ship railings before managing to climb to a higher vantage point on the upturned hull as waves tossed the vessel.
Rescuers on the ground have faced severe hurdles, including towering waves reaching up to 2.5 metres, which have significantly slowed down boarding and extraction efforts for passing rescue boats.
