Following Grêmio’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to Botafogo, the 77-year-old manager used his post-match press conference to launch a scathing attack on VAR, claiming the technology is actively "ruining football."

What Sparked the Outrage

The boiling point occurred in the final moments of the match at the Nilton Santos stadium. Trailing 3-2 in the 45th minute of the second half, Grêmio's Carlos Vinicius scored what appeared to be a dramatic late equalizer. However, the semi-automated offside VAR system stepped in, controversially ruling the goal out due to a marginal shoulder offside.

To make matters worse for the Tricolor, the bench was already fuming over an unreviewed penalty claim on Carlos Vinicius earlier in the second half, which referee Edna Alves chose to let play on.

An emotional Felipão, who stepped up as interim coach alongside newly hired manager Renato Portaluppi, didn't hold back. While hinting at permanent retirement from the touchline, he made VAR his primary target.

"I hope this is my last time having to deal with the anger of VAR," Scolari remarked. "They are ruining football. In a few days, people are going to start finding out some things."

Scolari went on to argue that technology has stripped on-field referees of their authority, comparing the centralized power of VAR to political dynamics in Brasília. "The referees are just there. They only blow the whistle for basic things on the pitch, but the VAR is the one who actually runs the game," he added.

The defeat leaves Grêmio in a precarious position. The club sits in 16th place with 28 points—just barely keeping its head above the relegation zone (Z-4) on goal difference. With their safety margin completely gone, the pressure is squarely on Renato Portaluppi as he takes full control of the squad.
