The Season 15 premiere of NBC’s Chicago Fire wasted no time shaking up the foundation of Firehouse 51. While the crew survived the harrowing events of the Season 14 finale, the premiere marked a major turning point: the departure of Battalion Chief Dominic “Dom” Pascal, played by Dermot Mulroney, and a high-stakes fight to save the career of Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso).
Here is what went down in the premiere and what these massive shifts mean for the future of the show.
Why Dermot Mulroney Left the Show
Dermot Mulroney’s exit after two seasons as Battalion Chief Dom Pascal wasn't due to behind-the-scenes drama, but rather a deliberate creative shift. Showrunner Victor Teran revealed that writing Pascal off was necessary to push the series into uncharted territory.
For the first time in 15 seasons, Firehouse 51 will operate without an active Chief in the house. This vacancy allows Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) to step up and lead the team.
According to Teran, Mulroney’s character served as an essential "bridge" to this new era. Mulroney expressed his gratitude for his time on the series, noting he "loved every minute of it" and praised the cast and crew for delivering incredibly challenging scenes.
The Accusations Against Joe Minoso's Character
While leadership changes, a darker storm is brewing for Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso). The premiere confirmed that Joe is fighting to prove his innocence after being accused of playing a role in the devastating fire that capped off Season 14.
To help his friend, Severide chose the leadership role at Firehouse 51 over a dedicated fire inspector job. However, Severide is keeping his investigator hat on in private, working behind the scenes to clear Joe’s name.
This dual role is highly dangerous. Before his departure, Chief Pascal delivered a stern warning to Severide, advising him to tread lightly between leadership and investigation—or face severe consequences.
What Lies Ahead for Firehouse 51
The absence of a traditional Chief completely alters the dynamic of the firehouse. Fans can expect to see Severide struggle to balance his new administrative responsibilities with his loyalty to Joe.
As for Mulroney, his schedule remains packed. The actor is set to star in the upcoming third season of the Netflix drama The Hunting Wives, alongside roles in the upcoming films Moon People and Streets.
