Champions League nights at Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park are usually legendary for their electric, sold-out atmospheres. However, during BVB’s match against Spanish side FC Villarreal, fans and television viewers alike will be greeted by a highly unusual sight: a massive, completely empty section in the stadium's North-East corner.
Specifically, blocks 55 to 59—representing roughly 4,000 seats—will remain entirely vacant. The reason behind this sudden ghost town in one of Europe’s most iconic venues is as bizarre as it is unprecedented.
The Bizarre Ticket Blunder
According to reports from BILD, the empty seats are the result of an incredibly low ticket demand from the visiting club. Under UEFA regulations, away teams are entitled to a five percent ticket allocation. However, Villarreal—hailing from a relatively small Spanish town of just 54,000 residents—barely utilized their contingent.
In a stunning turn of events, only exactly 39 Villarreal fans purchased tickets for the trip to Dortmund.
To accommodate these 39 traveling supporters and simplify stadium logistics, Dortmund officials made the decision to move the tiny group of away fans to a secure portion of the West Stand.
Why the Seats Remain Empty
Normally, BVB would quickly resell these unused seats to their own massive fanbase. However, doing so on such short notice proved impossible due to strict safety and organizational constraints.
Because Villarreal had previously indicated they only wanted seating tickets, BVB was able to successfully convert the lower-tier standing guest area for home fans. However, converting the massive upper-tier North-East corner into a home fan zone in such a short timeframe was simply not feasible.
As a result, instead of the usual sold-out crowd of 81,365, Dortmund expects an attendance of around 77,000.
High Stakes for Kovac
The quiet stadium corner adds unique pressure to a match where Borussia Dortmund is already feeling the heat. Coach Niko Kovac is under intense pressure to secure a victory, not just for momentum, but for the crucial Champions League payout bonuses.
Despite Villarreal's lack of fan support in the stands, Kovac is bracing for a highly tactical, possession-heavy battle.
"They have a new coach but still maintain that classic Spanish style with a lot of possession," Kovac warned. "They are technically clean and highly accurate. We need to reduce their time on the ball to disrupt their game."
