French actor and stage director Arnaud Denis died by euthanasia in Belgium at the age of 43. His legal counsel confirmed the news, stating the decision came after months of severe, unmanageable physical suffering linked to a medical implant.
What Happened
Denis underwent surgery for a right groin hernia on July 17, 2023, during which a polypropylene mesh was implanted. According to statements from his lawyer, Me Philippe Courtois, the procedure marked the beginning of a profound physical decline.
The actor suffered from relentless, debilitating pain that left him in a state of severe invalidity, forcing him to abandon his career. Despite having the implant surgically removed in the United States in April 2024, his condition continued to deteriorate. In July 2025, Denis shared his struggles publicly on social media, describing severe mobility issues, spinal deformation, and chronic pain that physicians could no longer treat.
Following consultations with three medical professionals in Namur, Belgium, Denis chose to undergo euthanasia to end his suffering.
Legal Battle Over Mesh Implants
Before his death, Denis became a vocal advocate for medical transparency. He founded the collective Victimes françaises des prothèses de hernies, gathering hundreds of testimonies from patients experiencing adverse side effects from similar hernia mesh devices.
In January 2026, the actor filed a criminal complaint for involuntary injuries. However, prosecutors closed the case in late August, citing insufficiently characterized infractions. Describing himself as revolted and disheartened by the decision, Denis pushed forward. Just days before his death, his lawyer filed a new complaint with a civil party constitution to force a formal judicial investigation, a legal battle his family and counsel intend to pursue.
