Apple has officially rolled out its major annual software update, iOS 27. While early online chatter centers on Siri upgrades and the controversial new "Liquid Glass" interface, the real story is much more urgent. Hidden beneath the visual redesign is a massive security cleanup: Apple has patched over 120 vulnerabilities.
Here is why you should update your iPhone as soon as possible.
The Danger in the Code
This isn't a routine update targeting minor app glitches. According to mobile security experts, iOS 27 heavily targets vulnerabilities deep within the iPhone's kernel—the absolute core of the operating system.
The most critical patch addresses CVE-2026-64752, a memory corruption flaw in Apple’s media-processing engine, CoreMedia. Security specialists at Jamf revealed that an attacker could potentially hijack an iPhone simply by forcing it to display a malicious image.
"Apple chose to remove the problematic code altogether rather than patching it," noted Adam Boynton, senior manager of enterprise strategy at Jamf. This radical step highlights how severe the vulnerability was.
Other key fixes include:
- Root Privilege Exploits (CVE-2026-43689): This vulnerability allowed malicious applications to bypass standard restrictions and gain full administrative (root) control over the device.
- WebKit Flaws: Apple patched three separate vulnerabilities in the engine that powers Safari, preventing potential web-based attacks.
Why It Matters
None of these 120-plus security flaws have been actively exploited by hackers yet. However, the release of these patches effectively alerts bad actors to where the weaknesses were. Leaving your phone unpatched leaves a window of opportunity open for cybercriminals targeting older software.
What You Should Do
If you are hesitant to jump to iOS 27 because of early software bugs or the drastic "Liquid Glass" visual changes, Apple has left you a safety net.
Alongside the main release, Apple launched iOS 26.7. This parallel update contains all the crucial security patches without upgrading your interface or core features.
To protect your data, head to Settings > General > Software Update on your iPhone and install either iOS 27 or iOS 26.7 today.
