The battle between Donald Trump and the White House press corps has reached a new flashpoint. Just hours after a federal judge ordered the administration to restore White House access for banned journalists, the administration found a new way to restrict coverage.
CNN has been barred from an upcoming trip aboard Air Force One to Knoxville, Tennessee, where Trump is scheduled to attend a college football game. In its place, the White House has tapped Real America's Voice, a conservative media network.
The Air Force One Loophole
This sudden move serves as a direct workaround to a major legal setback for the administration. Earlier, US District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a temporary injunction declaring Trump’s ban on journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico likely unconstitutional.
While the judge's ruling forced the White House to restore "hard passes" allowing these journalists back onto the executive grounds, it contained a critical limitation:
- It specifically addressed physical access to the White House complex.
- It did not directly rule on presidential travel pools or Air Force One access.
By seizing on this distinction, the administration effectively locked CNN out of the President's plane, despite the network's recent legal victory.
Disruption of the Press Pool
The decision to replace CNN with Real America's Voice disrupts decades of established White House protocol.
Typically, travel coverage is managed by a rotating "press pool" consisting of major broadcast networks. This system ensures that a small group of journalists is always present to cover the president and share footage with the entire press corps. Real America’s Voice is not a member of this official pool.
Prior to the court's ruling, other pool members had stood in solidarity, refusing to participate in pool duties after CNN and others were banned. While CNN reporters were briefly allowed back on White House grounds for a state visit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, this latest Air Force One ban signals that the administration has no intention of easing its media restrictions.
A Broader Crackdown
This is not an isolated incident. Throughout his tenure, Trump has aggressively targeted media outlets that produce unfavorable coverage.
Last year, the administration banished Associated Press reporters from White House events. The dispute arose because the AP declined to strictly adopt Trump’s executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."
With the AP case still on appeal and the White House finding loopholes in the latest injunction, the conflict over press freedom and executive accountability shows no signs of slowing down.
