The creative powerhouse behind Friday Night Lights—author Buzz Bissinger and director Peter Berg—are reuniting to adapt the true story of The Mosquito Bowl. Netflix has officially dropped the teaser trailer for the upcoming historical drama, which highlights a legendary football game played by Marines on the island of Guadalcanal in December 1944.
Based on Bissinger’s 2022 bestselling book, the movie follows elite college football players who traded their athletic careers for military service during World War II, stepping away from packed stadiums to face the brutal reality of the Pacific theater.

The newly released teaser showcases a talented young ensemble cast portraying the historical figures who took part in the matchup:

Behind the camera, Berg co-wrote the screenplay alongside Mark L. Smith. Berg also produces the film alongside Brian Grazer and Alex Gayner through Imagine Entertainment, bringing a proven knack for blending high-stakes sports dynamics with intense human drama.
Why It Matters
The game itself was born out of intense boredom and fierce rivalry on Guadalcanal as troops waited to be deployed to the bloody battlegrounds of Okinawa. On Christmas Eve in 1944, 65 Marines from the 4th and 29th regiments squared off on a makeshift gridiron covered in dirt, pebbles, and sharp coral.
These were not average players. The rosters boasted multiple All-Americans, former team captains, and standout athletes from powerhouse collegiate programs like Notre Dame, Purdue, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
However, the event carries profound historical weight. Out of the 65 players who suited up for the game, 15 were killed in action shortly after during the Battle of Okinawa, transforming a simple game of wartime recreation into a haunting monument to a lost generation of athletes.

The Mosquito Bowl is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on October 30, allowing moviegoers to experience the scale on the big screen, followed by its global streaming premiere on Netflix on November 25.
