An Ohio mother at the center of a horrific child neglect investigation has pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of child endangerment and neglect. Elizabeth Siders, 34, appeared in a Vinton County court on Wednesday, where a judge raised her bond to $550,000 and deemed her a flight risk.
The case, which also involves her husband, Gary Siders Jr., has shocked the small village of Hamden and raised serious questions about systemic failures.
The Deplorable Rescue in Hamden
In July, investigators raided the Siders family home and rescued 16 children, ranging in age from 17 months to 18 years old. Authorities described the living conditions as "deplorable" and the children as appearing "almost feral."
Reports indicate the children were confined to a single 12-by-12-foot room filled with human waste for much of the past four years. They did not attend school, some were completely unable to speak, and the eldest child—who is developmentally disabled—could not spell her own name.
Deepening Legal Trouble
Elizabeth Siders and Gary Siders Jr. face severe neglect charges, but the legal trouble extends further. Both have also been indicted in a separate case involving two counts of sexual battery and two counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor relative who was in their care in 2022.
While Gary Siders Jr. pleaded not guilty in August, the rest of the family's legal status remains in limbo. Gary Siders Sr. was recently ruled incompetent to stand trial. Meanwhile, Elizabeth, Gary Jr., and his mother, Christina Siders, have all filed requests for competency evaluations.
A Defense Strategy Centered on Isolation
In court, Elizabeth Siders’ attorney, Tommy Stolly, presented a defense focused on her history of isolation and continuous pregnancy. Stolly revealed that Siders married at age 15 and has been pregnant almost constantly for two decades, delivering between 16 and 18 children without receiving proper postpartum or regular medical care.
Stolly argued this decades-long cycle left her with severe mental health issues, questioning whether she had the cognitive capacity to understand her actions. During this time, birth records show she gave birth to a child in February 2022 and prematurely delivered twins in November 2022, who tragically died shortly after birth.
Additionally, observers noted Siders appeared in court without handcuffs, sparking speculation that she may be pregnant once again. The court has ordered her to have no contact with her husband or her children.
