Veteran Australian news anchor Richard Morecroft has died at the age of 70.
Best known as the reassuring face of the ABC’s evening news for nearly two decades, Morecroft passed away peacefully on the south coast of New South Wales. He had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.
A spokesperson confirmed that Morecroft died "at a time of his choosing," with his partner of 36 years, Alison Mackay, by his side. The announcement has sparked a wave of mourning across the Australian media landscape, with colleagues and viewers honoring a man celebrated for his warmth, intellect, and calming presence.
A Giant of Australian Television
For generations of Australians, Morecroft was the ultimate voice of authority. His versatile career spanned several landmark programs:
- ABC NSW 7pm News: He anchored the flagship bulletin from 1983 to 2002, becoming a trusted staple in living rooms nightly.
- Behind the News (BTN): He hosted the beloved children's current affairs show, breaking down complex global issues for younger audiences.
- Letters and Numbers: He brought his signature wit and intellect to the SBS cult-favorite quiz show.
Before his iconic run in Sydney, Morecroft also presented the ABC News bulletin in South Australia, cementing his reputation as one of the national broadcaster's most versatile talents.
"A Reassuring Presence"
Following the announcement, prominent media figures shared their grief and admiration.
Australian Story presenter Leigh Sales remembered him as a "gentle man" who went out of his way to mentor junior journalists. "He was full of life, he adored nature, he loved art, he loved people," Sales shared, noting that he handled his illness with immense dignity and stoicism.
ABC Managing Director Hugh Marks praised Morecroft as "one of the great broadcasters of his generation," highlighting his enduring role in the broadcaster's history. Meanwhile, ABC news presenter Jeremy Fernandez lauded his humility, stating that Morecroft was a model of "how to wear success and popularity with grace."
Former ABC News Breakfast presenter Michael Rowland added that Morecroft was a true role model. "When he said something, you absolutely believed him because it was heartfelt," Rowland remarked.
An Enduring Legacy
Morecroft’s passing marks the end of an era for Australian public broadcasting. Beyond his flawless delivery behind the news desk, he is remembered as a passionate environmentalist, art lover, and deeply empathetic person.
His unique ability to connect with audiences—whether delivering critical daily news or hosting lighthearted intellectual quiz shows—ensures his place as a permanent, beloved fixture in Australia's media history.
