If you planned a quick dinner or a late-summer barbecue in Germany this week, you need to check your refrigerator immediately. German discount supermarket giant Lidl has issued an urgent, nationwide recall for two popular bratwurst products.
The recall, announced by supplier SB-Convenience, warns that the affected sausages may contain foreign objects—specifically, sharp pieces of red plastic. Consuming these products poses a serious risk of internal injury, and health authorities are urging customers not to eat them under any circumstances.
The Affected Products
The recall is strictly limited to two specific bratwurst items sold under the "Metzgerfrisch" brand. If you purchased these products recently, look for the following details on the packaging:
- Metzgerfrisch Frische Grobe Bratwurst (400g)
- Best-before date (Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum): 15.09.2026
- Metzgerfrisch Frische Grobe Bratwurst XXL (1600g)
- Best-before date (Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatum): 13.09.2026
SB-Convenience has confirmed that no other products under the "Metzgerfrisch" brand or any other items supplied by SB-Convenience to Lidl Germany are affected by this recall.
Why This Matters
The presence of red plastic fragments in food processing lines is a serious hazard. When ingested, hard or sharp plastic pieces can cause cuts to the mouth, throat, or digestive tract, as well as internal bleeding or choking.
Because of this clear safety risk, both Lidl and the supplier are taking immediate preventative measures to pull the remaining inventory from store shelves.
What You Should Do Next
If you have one of the recalled packs in your fridge, do not consume the sausages. Instead, you can return them to any Lidl branch across Germany.
Lidl has confirmed that customers will receive a full refund of the purchase price. Crucially, you do not need to present a retail receipt to get your money back.
This warning comes amidst a busy season for retail quality control in Germany. For now, consumers are advised to remain vigilant, check their expiration dates, and prioritize safety in the kitchen.
