Six years after Crazy Rich Asians shattered box office expectations and became a cultural landmark, the Young family is making a high-profile return. HBO has officially greenlit an eight-episode TV series that will pick up directly where the hit 2018 film left off.

What Happened

The upcoming project brings back key members of the original film's ensemble cast. Constance Wu and Henry Golding return to star as Rachel Chu and Nick Young, continuing their story within the high-stakes world of Singapore's ultra-wealthy elite. Ronny Chieng also reprises his role as Eddie Cheng, while Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh returns in a recurring role as Nick’s formidable mother, Eleanor.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the original film screenplay, takes the reins as showrunner and executive producer. Jon M. Chu, director of the 2018 feature, joins the project as an executive producer. Lim described the new series as "the sequel we've been waiting for," noting that eight episodes will offer plenty of runtime to explore Kevin Kwan’s literary universe.

Why It Matters

The 2018 theatrical release was a landmark moment for representation, standing as the first major studio film with a contemporary all-Asian cast in over two decades. It grossed more than $238 million globally, earned two Golden Globe nominations, and launched several of its actors into Hollywood's top tier.

Director Jon M. Chu noted that in the years since, the cast members have evolved into global superstars, superheroes, and Academy Award winners. Adapting the story into an episodic HBO series allows the creators to adapt Kwan's book sequels—China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems—with significantly more narrative depth than a single movie sequel could afford.

What's Next

Co-produced by HBO and Warner Bros. Television, the series will officially enter production next year. While specific release dates remain unannounced, executives confirm that the writers' room is currently drafting the season.
